Business Strategy
GeneNews' Sentinel Principle is an enabling biological approach utilizing gene expression profiling in blood to detect disease and monitor state of health. The Sentinel Principle, in conjunction with our Discovery Funnel™ process, provides a platform technology that can provide biomarker content to address a broad range of clinical questions and detect virtually any disease. To remain focused, we have made cancer our primary disease area of interest. Other areas of interest include cardiovascular diseases, central nervous system disorders, psychiatric disorders and arthritis. These areas were selected based on the following criteria:
- Relatively high incidence of disease
- Impact of disease is life altering or life threatening
- Effective therapies exist
- Diagnostics are either invasive, ineffective, expensive or non-existent
- Favourable reimbursement opportunities exist
A great strength of the Sentinel Principle is its flexibility. By using this approach and applying it to different disease areas, we are able to generate specific combinations of biomarkers for numerous clinical applications.
- Early diagnosis of disease
- Staging of disease
- Identifying responders/non-responders to a specific therapy
- Monitoring progression/recurrence of disease
- Monitoring the effects of treatment
- Monitoring treatment compliance
Multi-prong Commercialization Approach
In order to expeditiously commercialize the Sentinel Principle, we have developed our Discovery Funnel: a fast, flexible and cost-effective process to identify and validate blood-based biomarkers. The result has been the evolution of a standardized process that enables the continuous creation of biomarker content for our three main business opportunities:

We generate biomarkers to develop and commercialize our proprietary line of Sentry diagnostic products focused on areas with the greatest unmet clinical need and the largest commercial opportunities. We also use our technology to identify biomarkers that can be co-developed with strategic commercial partners in the molecular diagnostics field. Finally, we can be a provider of biomarker solutions to the pharmaceutical industry to expedite the drug discovery and validation processes and enhance the post-market surveillance phase.
